Everything you need to know about breast augmentation

Anaesthesia

At Blooming Plastische Chirurgie, breast augmentation is performed under general anaesthesia. This means you will be completely asleep during the procedure and will feel no pain. Our experienced anaesthetists ensure a safe and comfortable anaesthetic, with your vital signs closely monitored throughout.

Duration of surgery

The duration of a breast augmentation varies depending on the complexity of the procedure and your individual situation. On average, breast augmentation takes 60 to 90 minutes. During the consultation, the plastic surgeon will give you a more accurate estimate of the expected duration.

Recovery time

Most women are able to resume their daily activities after approximately two weeks. However, it may take several weeks to months before the swelling has fully subsided and the final result is visible. Throughout the recovery process, we provide intensive guidance and tailored aftercare to ensure an optimal result.

Your personal introduction to the plastic surgeon

The first consultation focuses on your personal introduction to the plastic surgeon. In an open and confidential setting, you will discuss your wishes and expectations regarding breast augmentation. The surgeon listens attentively to your story and takes the time to thoroughly analyse your physique and breasts.

Tailored information

The surgeon will provide you with extensive information about the various options for breast augmentation, tailored to your individual situation and wishes. You will receive a realistic picture of the expected result, and the surgeon will explain how the procedure works. The entire treatment pathway will be discussed, including the preparation, the surgery itself, the aftercare, and the recovery process.

The goal of breast augmentation

The goal of breast augmentation is to give your breasts more volume and a more beautiful shape, in harmony with your body. During the consultation, your breasts will be measured and you will be able to try on trial implants to get an impression of the possible result. When choosing implants, we always take your wishes, your figure, and the quality of your skin into account.

Advantages, disadvantages, risks, and complications

The consultation also covers the advantages and disadvantages of breast augmentation, as well as the possible risks and complications. The surgeon will be open and honest about the possible side effects and will advise you on how to minimise them.

Your questions are central

Of course, there is ample opportunity during the consultation to ask all your questions about breast augmentation. The surgeon will answer these questions thoroughly and in plain language, so that you have a clear picture of what to expect.

A well-considered decision

We believe it is important that you are able to make a well-considered decision about breast augmentation after the consultation. We therefore pay great attention to informing you about the options, risks, and expectations. Your wishes and satisfaction with the result are our priority.

Consultation fee

A consultation fee of €100 applies. This amount will be deducted from the final price of the treatment should you decide to have the breast augmentation performed at Blooming Plastische Chirurgie.

Anaesthesia and duration of surgery

Breast augmentation is performed under general anaesthesia, so that you will feel no pain during the procedure and are comfortable throughout. The surgery takes an average of 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the complexity of the procedure and your individual situation. Prior to the surgery, the plastic surgeon will give you an accurate estimate of the expected duration.

Preparation and incision

Before the surgery begins, the plastic surgeon carefully marks the area to be treated. This ensures precise execution of the procedure. During the surgery, the surgeon makes a small incision of approximately 5 cm in the inframammary fold, through which the implant is inserted.

The procedure

Via this incision, the implant is placed either under the chest muscle or under the breast gland, depending on your skin, tissue, and the desired outcome. The incision is carefully sutured and covered with a dressing, so that the scar falls as discreetly as possible in the natural breast fold.

Drains and overnight stay

At the end of the surgery, thin drainage tubes (drains) may be placed if necessary to drain wound fluid and blood. These are usually removed the following morning. After breast augmentation, you will stay one night at our clinic so that we can provide you with the best care and support during the first phase of your recovery.

Immediately after surgery

After breast augmentation, you will be provided with a wire-free sports bra, which you must wear day and night for the first six weeks. This supports the breasts and promotes recovery. In general, you will be able to go home the following morning with supervision.

Swelling and pain

After surgery, your breasts may feel painful and tight. This is a normal part of the healing process and the pain will gradually diminish in the days following the procedure. Most women are able to resume their daily activities after approximately two weeks.

Scars

The scars are located in the natural breast fold and are therefore barely visible. In the first six weeks after breast augmentation, the scars will still be swollen and red, after which they will gradually fade. The full healing process of the scars takes one to one and a half years. To promote this process, we advise you to use a good scar cream and to protect your scars from UV radiation as much as possible.

Smoking and alcohol

To promote wound healing and reduce the risk of complications, we advise you not to smoke for six weeks before and six weeks after surgery. We also recommend that you refrain from alcohol from one week before until one week after the procedure.

Tailored aftercare

Throughout the recovery process, we provide intensive guidance and tailored aftercare to ensure that you can fully enjoy the results of your breast augmentation.

General risks

As with any surgical procedure, breast augmentation carries risks and possible complications. Although these risks are small, it is important to be aware of them. General risks of breast augmentation include post-operative bleeding, infections, swelling, delayed wound healing, and allergic reactions.

Specific complications

In addition to the general risks, there are also some specific complications that may occur in exceptional cases with breast augmentation, such as changes in sensation in the breasts or nipples, asymmetry of the breasts, and capsular contracture.

Capsular contracture

Capsular contracture occurs when the layer of connective tissue that normally forms around the implant contracts instead of remaining supple and thin. This can lead to hardening of the breasts and, in rare cases, pain and distortion.

Comprehensive information during the consultation

During the consultation, the plastic surgeon will discuss all risks and possible complications with you in detail. You will receive information about the likelihood of complications, how they can be prevented, and how they can be treated should they occur.

Your safety comes first

At Blooming Plastische Chirurgie, your safety comes first. Our experienced plastic surgeons take all possible precautions to minimise risks and prevent complications. Should a complication occur unexpectedly, you can count on professional and adequate care.

Transparency about costs

At Blooming Plastische Chirurgie, we understand that costs are an important factor in your decision to undergo breast augmentation. We therefore strive for transparency and offer breast augmentation at a fair price, where quality and care always come first.

Starting price and factors that influence the price

At Blooming Plastische Chirurgie, the cost of breast augmentation starts at €5.990,-. This amount is a guideline and covers the basic costs of the treatment, including consultations, anaesthesia, and aftercare procedures.

The final price of your breast augmentation may vary depending on various factors, such as:

  • The type of implant: Various types of implants are available, such as round or anatomical implants, each with their own price.

  • The placement of the implant: Placement under the chest muscle or under the breast gland can affect the cost.

  • Additional procedures: If you wish to have other procedures performed in addition to breast augmentation, such as a breast lift, the costs will be higher.

Personal price quote

During the consultation, the plastic surgeon will discuss your wishes and expectations and draw up a personal treatment plan. Based on this treatment plan, you will receive a detailed price quote so that you know exactly what to expect.

Frequently asked questions about breast augmentation

You can still breastfeed after breast augmentation surgery. The implant is placed under the glandular tissue and the surgery therefore has no effect on the function of the milk glands. Please note: not every woman can breastfeed — if it was not possible before the surgery, the likelihood of success afterwards is small.
When you can return to work depends on the type of work you do. If your work is physically light, you can return after two weeks. For physically demanding activities and lifting, you will need to wait longer. The timeframe will be extended (from four weeks onwards) if you do physically heavier work.
During the first consultation, you can try on various sizes of implants. Based on your wishes and the expertise of the plastic surgeon, you will together arrive at a suitable size.
After breast augmentation, small scars will remain in the breast fold. These scars will certainly be red and visible in the beginning. Once the wounds have closed, you can apply a scar cream to the scars. After approximately one year, the scars will have faded into a thin line. With skin types with higher pigmentation, the scars may remain somewhat more visible.
Prior to breast augmentation, you will discuss your expectations together with your treating plastic surgeon. We look at your physique, skin structure, and the existing glandular tissue. Based on your wishes and the technical possibilities, a personalised treatment plan is drawn up.
We use two types of breast implants: round and anatomically shaped implants. During the first consultation, we will show you the different types of breast implants in various sizes. Which type is suitable for you depends on the shape of your breasts. The round breast implant provides volume across the entire breast, while the teardrop-shaped (anatomical) implant provides more volume at the bottom.
In the first period after the procedure, your breasts or nipples may be less sensitive than you are used to. This usually lasts a few weeks to several months. Depending on the procedure, your breasts may also be more sensitive than before the surgery. In most cases, the normal sensation in your breasts will gradually return.
The result of breast augmentation is generally permanent, but over time your breasts may change due to a number of factors: for example, pregnancy, breastfeeding, ageing, weight loss, or sagging skin. You can then have the implants replaced.
Before the surgeon begins the procedure, they mark on the breast where the incisions will be made. Our plastic surgeons place the implants via the breast fold as this gives the lowest risk of capsular formation and the scar falls neatly in the skin fold. After approximately one year, the scars will have become inconspicuous thin lines.
Experience shows that after approximately two weeks you will be able to resume most daily activities. When you can return to work depends on the type of work you do. If your work is physically light, you can return after two weeks. For physically demanding activities and lifting, you will need to wait longer. The timeframe will be extended (from four weeks onwards) if you do physically heavier work. After approximately four weeks you may lift again, and after six weeks you can gradually resume sporting activities.
After breast augmentation, you will receive a sports bra from us that you must wear day and night for the best recovery. How long this will be for you depends on your situation. You must wear the bra day and night for at least the first six weeks. You will discuss the best option for your case together with your treating plastic surgeon.
The treatment takes place in Haarlem, within the Spaarne Gasthuis Haarlem Noord. We welcome clients from across the Netherlands and abroad.
Breast augmentation is a common and safe procedure when performed by an experienced, BIG-registered plastic surgeon. At Blooming, we work with high-quality Motiva implants that meet the strictest European safety standards. During the consultation, we will discuss all risks in detail.
After surgery, you may experience pain and tightness in the breast area. This is normal and is managed with pain relief. Most patients experience the most discomfort in the first few days, after which it quickly subsides.
Yes, you will receive a prescription for pain relief that you can use at home. Our team will give you comprehensive instructions on the use of the medication and the recovery process.
