An arm lift (brachioplasty) is a surgical procedure in which loose skin and excess fatty tissue on the upper arms are removed. It goes beyond aesthetics; excess skin on the upper arms can occur due to significant weight loss, ageing or pregnancy and affects daily life and self-confidence. With a carefully performed arm lift, we restore the contours of your upper arms and give you a tighter and more balanced result.

Everything you need to know about arm lift (brachioplasty)

Anaesthesia

At Blooming Plastische Chirurgie, an arm lift is performed under general anaesthesia. This means that you will be fully asleep during the procedure and will feel no pain. Our experienced anaesthetists ensure a safe and comfortable anaesthetic, with your vital functions closely monitored.

Duration of the procedure

The duration of an arm lift varies depending on the complexity of the procedure and your individual situation. On average, an arm lift takes 120 to 240 minutes. During the consultation, the plastic surgeon will give you a more precise estimate of the expected procedure duration.

Recovery time

After the arm lift, you will stay one night in the clinic for observation and aftercare. Most patients can resume their daily activities after 2 to 4 weeks. Heavy work and sport are only permitted again after 4 to 6 weeks. Throughout the recovery process, we will guide you closely and provide tailored aftercare to ensure an optimal result.

Your personal introduction to the plastic surgeon

The first consultation is centred on your personal introduction to the plastic surgeon. In an open and confidential atmosphere, you will discuss your wishes and expectations regarding the arm lift. The surgeon will listen carefully to your story and take the time to thoroughly analyse your upper arms and the extent of the excess skin.

Tailored information

The surgeon will provide you with comprehensive information about the various options for an arm lift, tailored to your individual situation and wishes. Your medical background, medication use and overall health will also be discussed. You will receive a realistic picture of the expected result and the surgeon will explain how the procedure works. The entire treatment process will be discussed, including the preparation, the surgery itself, the aftercare and the recovery process.

The goal of an arm lift

The goal of an arm lift is to tighten the loose skin on the upper arms and, where necessary, to remove excess fatty tissue, so that the upper arms achieve a tighter and more balanced contour. The plastic surgeon will discuss during the consultation which technique is most suitable for your situation and what you can realistically expect from the result.

Advantages and disadvantages, risks and complications

During the consultation, the advantages and disadvantages of an arm lift will also be discussed, as well as the possible risks and complications. The surgeon will be open and honest about the possible side effects and advise you on how to minimise them.

Your questions are central

Of course, there is ample opportunity during the consultation to ask all your questions about the arm lift. The surgeon will answer these questions comprehensively and in plain language, so that you get a good picture of what to expect.

A well-considered decision

We believe it is important that after the consultation you are able to make a well-considered decision about the arm lift. That is why we devote considerable attention to informing you about the possibilities, risks and expectations. Your wishes and satisfaction with the result are our priority.

Consultation fee

A consultation fee of €100 applies. This amount will be deducted from the final price of the treatment, should you decide to have the arm lift performed at Blooming Plastische Chirurgie.

Anaesthesia and procedure duration

An arm lift is performed under general anaesthesia, so that you are fully asleep during the procedure and feel no pain. The operation takes an average of 120 to 240 minutes, depending on the complexity of the procedure and your individual situation. Prior to the operation, the plastic surgeon will give you a precise estimate of the expected procedure duration.

Preparation and marking

Before the operation begins, the plastic surgeon carefully marks the area to be treated. This ensures precise execution of the procedure and determines where the incisions will be placed and how much skin will be removed.

The procedure

In cases of limited skin sagging, the correction can be performed by tightening and suturing the skin in the armpit. In most cases, the skin is tightened in two directions, resulting in a scar that runs from the elbow to the armpit. This scar is placed on the inside of the upper arm, making it as inconspicuous as possible. If necessary, excess fatty tissue is also removed during the same operation. The skin is closed with subcutaneous sutures and covered with wound closure strips.

Drains and overnight stay

Thanks to improved techniques, drains are often not necessary for an arm lift. After the procedure, you will stay one night in our clinic, so that we can provide you with the best care and support during the first phase of your recovery.

After the operation

After the arm lift, you will receive a firm elastic garment with arm sleeves that you must wear day and night for the first four weeks and then for a further two weeks during the day. Our team will provide you with comprehensive aftercare instructions, so that you are well prepared when you go home.

Immediately after the operation

After the arm lift, you will stay one night in the clinic for observation. The following morning, you can go home with assistance. Please arrange for someone to accompany you for transport, as you are not permitted to drive yourself. During the first two weeks after the operation, you should move your arms as little as possible.

Swelling and pain

After the operation, the upper arms may feel painful and tight. This is a normal part of the healing process and will gradually subside in the days following the procedure. Wound healing takes approximately two weeks, after which you can begin light work. Heavy work and sport are only permitted again after 4 to 6 weeks.

Scars

The scar is located on the inside of the upper arm and runs from the elbow to the armpit. During the first six weeks, the scars will still be red and swollen, after which this will gradually subside. The full healing process for the scars takes one to one and a half years. To promote this process, we advise you to use good scar cream and to minimise exposure of your scars to UV radiation.

Smoking and alcohol

To promote the wound healing process and reduce the risk of complications, we advise you not to smoke for six weeks before and six weeks after the operation. We also recommend that you refrain from drinking alcohol from one week before until one week after the procedure.

Tailored aftercare

Throughout the recovery process, we will guide you closely and provide tailored aftercare to ensure you can fully enjoy the result of your arm lift.

General risks

As with any surgical procedure, an arm lift carries risks and possible complications. Although these risks are small, it is important to be aware of them. General risks associated with an arm lift include post-operative bleeding, infections, swelling, delayed wound healing and allergic reactions.

Specific complications

In addition to the general risks, there are some specific complications that may occur in exceptional cases, such as blood accumulation under the skin, changes in sensation in the upper arms and dissatisfaction with the aesthetic result. The risk of infection is greater in patients who are overweight; it is therefore important to be as close to a normal weight as possible before the operation. The plastic surgeon will discuss this in detail with you during the consultation.

Comprehensive information during the consultation

During the consultation, the plastic surgeon will discuss all risks and possible complications in detail with you. You will receive information about the likelihood of complications, how they can be prevented and how they can be treated should they occur.

Your safety is our priority

At Blooming Plastische Chirurgie, your safety is our top priority. Our experienced plastic surgeons take every possible precaution to minimise risks and prevent complications. Should a complication unexpectedly occur, you can count on professional and appropriate care.

Transparency about costs

At Blooming Plastische Chirurgie, we understand that cost is an important factor in your decision to undergo an arm lift. That is why we strive for transparency and offer the treatment at a fair price, with quality and care always our top priority.

Starting price and factors that influence the price

At Blooming Plastische Chirurgie, the costs of an arm lift start from €5.500,-. This amount is a guideline and covers the basic costs of the treatment, including consultations, anaesthesia, overnight stay and aftercare procedures.

The final price of your arm lift may vary, depending on various factors, such as:

  • The extent of the correction: A minor arm lift differs in complexity and price from an extensive correction.

  • Combination with liposuction and Renuvion: An arm lift combined with liposuction and skin tightening via Renuvion incurs higher costs.

  • Additional procedures: If you combine the arm lift with another body contouring procedure, the total costs will be adjusted accordingly.

Personal quote

During the consultation, the plastic surgeon will discuss your wishes and expectations and draw up a personal treatment plan. Based on this treatment plan, you will receive a detailed quote, so that you know exactly where you stand.

Frequently asked questions about arm lift (brachioplasty)

Over the years, the skin on the upper arms loses its elasticity. This can cause the skin to sag. This can also occur after significant weight loss.

If you are bothered by loose skin on your upper arms, you may consider an arm lift to improve the contours.

The result of an arm lift is in principle permanent, provided your weight remains stable. If you gain weight, the skin may stretch again and the arms may become fuller once more.

No, an arm lift does not improve skin quality. Any stretch marks will remain visible. However, the procedure does tighten the skin, making your upper arms look smoother and firmer.
