Our doctors regularly appear in the news; this time it is Dr Kalam Ahmed who speaks in De Brugkrant. In this article, he talks about his profession and the diversity it entails. As a good plastic surgeon, you sometimes also say no. Clients expect honest advice and sometimes something is technically not feasible or would not lead to an improvement. Dr Ahmed combines reconstructive surgery at the Burns Centre in Beverwijk and the Spaarne Gasthuis with plastic surgery at Blooming. His work has never disappointed him for a single day and he sees people walk out beaming every day. This makes him happy and is what he does it for. It is a Wednesday morning at the clinic and Kalam Ahmed takes his time for his clients, as always. He does this by listening attentively, explaining the possibilities and also naming the potential risks. It remains a procedure and is a serious matter. "We consider it important to mention this." At Blooming Plastische Chirurgie, a group of six doctors offers the full range of cosmetic surgery, from eyelid corrections and a facelift to a breast augmentation, tummy tuck and liposuction. They are excellent plastic surgeons who deliver the highest quality care. Because they also work in the burns centre - reconstructive surgery that is technically often extremely demanding - they can deliver on their promises. "The experience we gain there we bring to the private care clinic." Another key point of Blooming: permanent doctors (not consultants) see and treat the client. They conduct the pre- and post-operative consultations and take their time. Together with the client, they draw up a plan. "What we are doing most at the moment is facial surgery. There is increasing demand for face and neck lifts." Another trend: liposculpture - reshaping the body. For this, a combination of liposuction and lipofilling is used when necessary. Dr Ahmed has been working as a plastic surgeon since 2009. During his medical studies, he looked for a specialism in which he could also be entrepreneurial. "That is part of me, just like the creative side." It is exactly as he thought it would be. "The combination is wonderful. In cosmetic care, clients are not ill. They want to look better. Their high expectations can sometimes be a challenge." Yes, he does sometimes say no. "We believe we have a responsibility in this. Something may not be technically feasible, or a client wants something that I feel would not be an improvement. They expect our best advice and sometimes that advice is no. If I do not have a good feeling about it, I will not do it." That is why - Ahmed emphasises it once more - it is so important that the surgeon conducts the consultation personally. "Then you find out what someone wants. And whether you can deliver it. Plastic surgery is about finding the right solution." That is what makes his profession so rewarding. "At the end of every working day I have made people happy. They often feel better in their own skin, look more confident. That makes me happy. I can channel the creativity within me, and people end up radiant because of it." Dr Kalam Ahmed is a member of: the Dutch Association for Plastic Surgery (NVPC), the Dutch Association for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (NVEPC) and Fellow of the European Board of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (EBOPRAS). He also has good reviews on Zorgkaart Nederland, which you can read here.
