'Our' plastic surgeon Robert de Wijn is a specialist in eyelid corrections. He is happy to share the most important things you should know before having an upper eyelid correction. An upper eyelid correction is performed frequently at our clinic. The main reason clients choose an upper eyelid correction is skin laxity resulting in a tired appearance and drooping eyelids that cause irritation. Because the skin around the eyes is very thin and sensitive, and the eyelids are constantly in motion, the risk of skin laxity is high. An upper eyelid correction under local anaesthesia can resolve this discomfort. The procedure takes approximately thirty minutes, and after one week you will have largely recovered. Always Have the Procedure Performed by an Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon If you are considering an upper eyelid correction, you are aware that there are many providers of this relatively straightforward procedure. How do you choose the right specialist? An eyelid correction remains a surgical procedure, and it is therefore important to have an upper eyelid correction performed by a plastic surgeon who preferably specialises in aesthetic procedures. Do not be misled by the title 'cosmetic surgeon' — in the Netherlands this is not a protected title and these specialists have not undergone the same training as a plastic surgeon. Even (general) physicians or ophthalmologists do not have the same knowledge and experience as a plastic surgeon. This expertise is extremely important, as it minimises the risk of complications. An Eyelid Correction Can Be Performed Year-Round There is sometimes confusion about the best time of year for an eyelid correction. We perform this procedure frequently throughout the year. The scar falls neatly into the skin fold of the upper eyelid and is therefore not directly exposed to sunlight. It is still advisable to protect the scar with an SPF 50 sunscreen. Wear sunglasses during the first weeks after an eyelid correction. Take Time Off Work The healing process varies from person to person, but almost everyone experiences some degree of swelling, bruising, and eye irritation after an upper eyelid correction. Take it easy during the first week after the procedure and these symptoms will resolve on their own. Physical exertion during this period will only increase the swelling. Depending on your personal rate of healing, you will be presentable again after one to two weeks. The Procedure Can Be Repeated If Necessary An upper eyelid correction can be performed multiple times. The old scar is removed and the new excess skin is also excised. A new scar will form in its place. The longevity of an eyelid correction varies from person to person and depends primarily on the quality of your skin. If you have thin, lax skin, you may need to return sooner than someone with elastic, firm skin.
