What Is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a skin resurfacing treatment that uses a specially formulated acid solution to remove the outer layers of the skin, revealing a fresher, smoother complexion beneath. Chemical peels can effectively treat sun damage, fine lines, uneven skin tone, and acne scarring. In this article, our skincare specialists explain the different types of peels available, what each one is best suited for, and what to expect before, during, and after the treatment. Whether you are new to peels or looking to deepen your understanding, this guide covers everything you need to know.

Treatments such as breast augmentation, facelift or an eyelid correction are by now familiar to many people. Kliniek Blooming, however, offers a wide range of other plastic surgery services that may be somewhat less well known. One example of such a treatment is the chemical peel. In this article, we would like to tell you a little more about this lesser-known procedure.

Superficial or deep treatment

Treatment by means of a chemical peel is a technique used, among other things, to make wrinkles less visible. In addition to wrinkles and irregularities, a chemical peel is also used for sun damage or uneven pigmentation on the skin. The method initially causes damage to the epidermis. The skin will recover from this, resulting in smoother and more even skin. Peels can be applied superficially or deeply, depending on the treatment. Superficial peels are used for the removal of fine wrinkles, sun damage, acne scarring, enlarged pores, and pigmentation. Deep peels are used in the case of deep wrinkles and scars. The word peeling refers to the shedding of skin. The method causes damage to the upper layer of the skin, prompting it to begin healing itself — somewhat similar to how the skin reacts when the upper layer is burned by, for example, the sun.

How does a chemical peel treatment work?

First, a liquid will be applied to the skin. This liquid consists of a combination of various chemical elements, including trichloroacetic acid or phenol. The deeper the peel needs to be, the more concentrated the chemical elements will be. This depends on your individual situation. The applied liquid then requires time to take effect. Once the necessary time has elapsed, the treatment is complete. In some cases, the skin needs to be bandaged or immediately treated with an ointment or cream. After the treatment, you do not need to remain under supervision and you may go home straightaway. After a few days, the skin will have healed and you will experience the results of the peel. Although the skin may appear slightly pink in colour during the first few months, this is nothing to be concerned about. Do bear in mind that you should avoid sun exposure for a period of time after the treatment. Are you interested in a chemical peel treatment? We would be happy to discuss the options with you.
