Plastic surgery is not the right answer for everyone, and at Blooming we believe it is our responsibility to advise against procedures when they are not in a patient's best interest. There are situations where we would counsel against surgery — including unrealistic expectations, insufficient physical health, recent major life changes, or underlying psychological concerns. In this article, our plastic surgeons explain the circumstances in which they advise caution or defer treatment, and why we believe that saying no is sometimes the most important thing a good surgeon can do for their patient.
Our plastic surgeons always strive for the most beautiful results and will only perform a procedure when it is entirely safe. As a result, there are occasions when we advise against a treatment. In this blog, we outline a number of possible reasons.
Poor overall health
For virtually every type of procedure we perform at Blooming Plastic Surgery, it is important that you are in good health. A healthy body recovers more quickly after a procedure and the risk of complications is lower. Extreme obesity and advanced age, for example, can be reasons to advise against undergoing general anaesthesia.
Addicted to plastic surgery
If you have already had numerous procedures, the surgeon will always ask about your motivation for the operation. This is to ensure that you are not, for example, addicted to the treatments themselves. If, in the surgeon's view, the operation will not contribute to an improved result, you may receive a negative recommendation during the consultation.
Unrealistic expectations of the result
Although our plastic surgeons have achieved many beautiful results, they cannot perform miracles. For example, with a facelift it is possible to reduce the number of wrinkles, but after the treatment you will not look the way you did when you were twenty. If, in the plastic surgeon's opinion, your expectations of the possibilities are too unrealistic, there is a chance that you will not be treated.
An impulsive decision
Many of our clients have been thinking for years about the type of procedure they wish to undergo. During the intake consultation, the plastic surgeon always reviews your medical history with you. Your length of consideration is also discussed. The plastic surgeon may advise you to take more time to reflect, so that you can make the best, most considered decision.
The costs of the procedure
In addition to the cost of the operation, undergoing a procedure often means accounting for a recovery period of several weeks. For example, you are typically unable to work for the first two weeks following a facelift. During the consultation, we therefore always inform you thoroughly about the various costs and explain all the expenses — beyond the procedure itself — that you need to take into account.
Plastic surgery at Blooming: a consultation first
To make a thorough assessment of your overall health and wishes, at Blooming we always begin by inviting you for a consultation in which we discuss your wishes and expectations. The plastic surgeon will also ask about your general health during this conversation. Following that consultation, the surgeon will have sufficient information to advise whether you can safely undergo the procedure.
