Pros and Cons of Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is one of the most complex and nuanced procedures in plastic surgery, and it is important to understand both the potential benefits and the challenges before making a decision. In this article, our plastic surgeons at Blooming explain what rhinoplasty can and cannot achieve, what the recovery involves, and what factors influence the outcome. We also discuss the importance of having realistic expectations and choosing an experienced surgeon. Whether you are considering rhinoplasty for aesthetic or functional reasons, this guide will help you approach the decision with confidence and clarity.

With a rhinoplasty the plastic surgeon brings the nose into balance with the rest of your face. To align your expectations as closely as possible with the actual result, this page provides information about the pros and cons of rhinoplasty procedures. The advantages of a rhinoplasty at Blooming are:

  • More balance in the face
  • Preservation of natural appearance
  • No visible scars
  • Comprehensive guidance during recovery

Any medical procedure carries risks. For instance, the result may not be in line with your expectations, and there is a risk of allergic reactions. On this page, you will find more information about the various risks associated with a rhinoplasty.

Drawing up a treatment plan for rhinoplasty

During the preparatory consultation, you will discuss your wishes with the plastic surgeon and receive advice on which rhinoplasty will achieve the best result. The surgeon will also ask you questions about your general health and provide information about risks, complications, and the course of recovery. Based on your medical details, wishes, and the shape of your nose, the surgeon will draw up a personalised treatment plan.

"At Blooming, you feel seen and heard. During the preparatory consultation, the plastic surgeon takes ample time to discuss your concerns and you receive clear advice. If you are considering a rhinoplasty, I can genuinely recommend Blooming Plastic Surgery!"

A nose that suits you

The nose is a defining feature of your face. If you are not satisfied with the nasal tip or length, the size of the nostrils, or the shape or width of the nose, these can be adjusted with a rhinoplasty. After the procedure, your face will be more balanced, which often leads to increased self-confidence. A rhinoplasty may also be the solution if you feel that you have a crooked nose.

Recovery after rhinoplasty

At Blooming, you can have a nasal tip correction or a comprehensive rhinoplasty. After both procedures, your nose will be swollen and bruising will develop. The swelling makes breathing more difficult. After a comprehensive rhinoplasty, you will wear a splint, and after a nasal tip correction, we protect the stitches with plasters. It is important that you rest a great deal after the procedure. Rest for at least one week and wait six weeks before exercising or engaging in strenuous physical activity.

Risks and complications

The nasal tip correction is usually performed under local anaesthesia, whilst the comprehensive rhinoplasty always requires general anaesthesia. During recovery, your nose will be very sensitive; you can take pain relief for this. The nasal tip correction and comprehensive rhinoplasty carry a number of risks. For instance, you may:

  • Be dissatisfied with the result;
  • Experience swelling;
  • Have an allergic reaction to materials or anaesthetic agents;
  • Develop infected wounds;
  • Experience post-operative bleeding (rare);
  • Develop scarring (rare).

If you stop smoking and drinking before the procedure, your recovery will be faster. Smoke can cause infection of the wounds, whilst alcohol narrows your blood vessels. This reduces circulation to the nose and impairs the delivery of essential substances to the wound.

Recovering from a rhinoplasty

A nasal tip correction is performed under local anaesthesia, which means you can go home almost immediately after the procedure. For the comprehensive rhinoplasty, general anaesthesia is required; you will remain with us for a few hours for observation. After a general anaesthetic, wait at least one day before driving and ensure that someone is able to take you home.

After one week, you will come in for a follow-up appointment. The surgeon will remove the stitches and check that the wounds are healing well. In most cases, you can gradually return to work in the second week. Wait at least another six weeks before engaging in intensive exercise or strenuous physical activity.
