Pros and Cons of Eyelid Correction

Eyelid correction surgery can make a remarkable difference to how rested and youthful you appear, but it is important to weigh the benefits against the considerations before proceeding. In this article, our specialists at Blooming outline the key advantages of both upper and lower eyelid surgery, as well as the recovery process, the risks involved, and what results you can realistically expect. Whether you are motivated by aesthetic or functional concerns, this honest overview will help you understand whether eyelid surgery is the right choice for you.

Every cosmetic treatment has its advantages and disadvantages, and an eyelid correction is no exception. To serve you as well as possible, you will find all the advantages and disadvantages listed below. The advantages of an eyelid correction are:
  • A fresh and more youthful appearance
  • Invisible scars in the fold of the eyelid or along the lash line
  • A virtually painless procedure with minimal risk of complications
  • The best aftercare for a full recovery
The procedure requires a great deal of expertise from the plastic surgeon, who must make an assessment of the intended result of the eyelid correction. As with any procedure, there are also disadvantages to an eyelid correction. For example, it is initially visible that you have had an eyelid correction, you will need to take things easy for a while, and there is always a risk of complications.

A Personalised Treatment Plan for the Best Result

It is important that you have realistic expectations of the final result of the eyelid correction. During the first consultation, your treating plastic surgeon will therefore discuss everything related to the treatment: which type of eyelid correction is most suitable for you, what the result will be, what the possible risks and complications are, and how the recovery proceeds. In addition, all your questions about the eyelid correction will be answered during this consultation. Based on your medical records, your wishes, and the technical possibilities, the treating cosmetic surgeon creates a personalised treatment plan.

"A knowledgeable and approachable practitioner. Takes time and does not rush into surgery. My husband first received an extensive consultation and was then advised to wait another year before having the operation. I greatly appreciated that. I would recommend Dokter Van der Pot to everyone."

A Fresh and Youthful Appearance After the Eyelid Correction

With an eyelid correction, the plastic surgeon creates a fresh and more youthful appearance. The excess skin and surplus fat above or below the eyes is removed, giving you a more open look. With an eyelid correction lasting just half an hour, you will appear less tired. You will be best able to see the full result once the swelling and bruising have completely disappeared. This is usually after two to six weeks. It then takes several months before you can assess the definitive result of the eyelid correction, and the scars require a year to reach their final state.

Risks and Complications

An eyelid correction is performed under local anaesthesia, so you will not feel anything during the procedure. Any pain after the procedure can be managed with paracetamol. Experience shows that the recovery process is painless. Naturally, the treatment area does require time to heal. The complications that may arise after an eyelid correction are minimal. The side effects that rarely occur are:
  • A pulling sensation in the eyelid due to swelling and scarring
  • Fluid accumulation around the eyes
  • Allergic reaction
  • Unsatisfactory aesthetic result
  • Irritated eyes (eye drops can be prescribed for this)
  • Loss of sensation in the eyelids (very rare)
  • Post-operative bleeding (very rare)

Aftercare and Follow-Up

After the eyelid correction, you may go home immediately. Please bear in mind that you are not permitted to drive independently. Always ensure that you bring someone along to drive you home. During the first few days, the area around your eyes will be red and swollen, sometimes accompanied by bruising. The swelling will naturally subside after approximately two weeks. After one week, you will return to our clinic for the follow-up appointment. During this appointment, the dressings and sutures will be removed. After the first check-up, you may also gradually begin light physical work again. Do allow your body the time to recover fully. We provide extensive advice on aftercare on our page about recovery after an eyelid correction.

"I had my under-eye bags removed 3 months ago. Excellent help, a great deal of personal attention, and friendly doctors and nurses. The result is perfect! Highly recommended."
