In May, the second edition of the magazine Inzicht was published - a publication by Spaarne Gasthuis. For this edition, our own plastic surgeon Kalam Ahmed was interviewed about cosmetic and reconstructive surgery - two fields in which he is highly skilled and accomplished.
"I certainly do not see myself as an artist," Kalam Ahmed begins. "It is a highly creative profession - it is about more than just repairing." But it is the constructive, reconstructive aspect that makes this discipline so fascinating. "By practising my craft I can give people a better feeling, a stronger self-image. And that is truly something beautiful." The most important thing in his profession is giving people honest advice, because that creates realistic expectations. What you see is what you get - and in that you can strive for perfection. That is also Dr Ahmed highest goal: satisfaction for both the client and for himself.
Ahmed, who was born in Bangladesh, knew from a young age that he wanted to be a doctor. When he moved to the Netherlands at the age of seven and his father survived a serious stomach operation, he thought: this is it. He therefore began his medical degree at the VU, after which he originally wanted to become a cardiac surgeon. Yet he ended up in plastic surgery because the field is so diverse. You see people who come for oncological reconstructions (following cancer), plastic surgery, burns reconstructions, hand surgery, general surgery and paediatric surgery. Within Blooming clinic, Ahmed focuses on cosmetic plastic surgery. He experiences weekly that the taboo surrounding cosmetic plastic surgery is diminishing. Rightly so, because so many people have been helped with beautiful results.
Various studies show that people are more confident, happier, more successful and healthier after a cosmetic operation. It gives someone a better feeling about themselves, and that is surely a good thing. Of course, clients here are critical - but that is understandable. They do not come with a medical problem but want to improve something aesthetically. You only choose that if the result will be an improvement and is executed to perfection. To achieve this result, the right information is of great importance. That is why Dr Ahmed sees all clients for a first consultation. During this consultation he informs them about the options and the achievable result. Only then can you make a well-considered decision.
