The New Motiva Breast Implants at Blooming

At Blooming PC we are proud to say that we were among the first Dutch practices to work with Motiva breast implants. Read more about it here!

A first at Blooming PC! As the first clinic in the Netherlands, we are able to work with the Motiva Ergonomix 2 breast implants. We spoke with plastic surgeon Wouter van der Pot, who tells us everything about these new implants and why Blooming has chosen to work with them. 'This year marks sixty years since breast implants first came to market. At the time, the implants were mirror-smooth, which could quickly cause issues with the capsule surrounding the prosthesis. This could thicken and contract, causing the breast to feel hard — a condition known as capsular contracture. This is naturally uncomfortable and can cause pain. In response, implants were made rougher and more textured, in order to increase the surface area and reduce the effect of a contracting scar. Whilst smooth implants under a microscope could be compared to a mirror, textured implants could microscopically be compared to the Grand Canyon, with a very rough surface,' explains plastic surgeon Wouter van der Pot. 'In very rare cases, that rough surface can in turn trigger an enormous tissue reaction or immune response. Ideally, you would want a surface that sits somewhere in between. The Motiva Ergonomix breast implants offer that possibility with their nanosurface, which under a microscope looks more like a gently rolling landscape. So a larger surface area, but not entirely rough — a bit of the best of both worlds.'

The latest range

'We recently received the Ergonomix 2 from Motiva. These are even softer than their predecessor — to be precise, 45% softer — because they are highly elastic. The implant can stretch up to 823% of its own size. Of course, this never happens whilst it is inside the body, but it does hold great promise in terms of safety and durability. Another great advantage: because the implant is so flexible, the incision through which we insert it is considerably smaller, resulting in a smaller scar as well — the Minimal Scar Technique. Because the prostheses are so soft, they fall very naturally, like a teardrop. A natural look is something we strive for as a clinic: not large, round "fake-looking" breasts, but rather a natural look that can still be full, but where women are not aware of a prosthesis in their body and are not hindered in their daily lives.'

Covered for the future

'The Ergo2 also comes standard with the JOY programme, which places the wellbeing of the woman at the centre. The procedure is linked to a Women's Choice programme. Most implants do come with a form of guarantee, but a potential re-operation in the rare case of a problem with the prosthesis is not covered — only the implant itself is. The JOY package covers a potential revision surgery, even if the woman changes her mind within two years for any reason and wishes to have her prostheses removed. You can think of it as a kind of insurance policy. You can therefore change your mind without having to bear the financial consequences.'

Developments

'Of course, it is a new product and in the long term we can only see how the breast implant performs, but the laboratory findings are very promising. Breast implants are currently not a "lifetime device": the current advice is to replace them after 15 years. In the future, we naturally hope to be able to extend that timeframe. Yes, the technology is truly moving in the right direction, especially when we look back 10 years.'
