'In the vast majority of cases you have to pay for this yourself. Only if there is a restriction of the visual field might you be eligible for reimbursement by your health insurer. The best chance of reimbursement is when approximately 50% of the pupil is covered by the eyelid. Yet the correction of mild excess skin can already be experienced as a great relief. It is a shame that the rules for qualifying for reimbursement have changed so significantly.'
What does the procedure for an eyelid correction involve?
We first carry out a physical examination to determine the cause of the problem. We investigate where the excess skin originates from; this may have developed from the eyelid itself and the process of ageing and laxity, but may also have arisen from a low position of the eyebrows. There may also be a ptosis of the eyelid itself. Before performing an eyelid correction you must examine and correctly identify this. If you do not, you may not achieve the desired result and you will not resolve the actual problem. It is also possible that a brow lift, forehead lift, or levator plasty (correction of a drooping eyelid) is a better option. In certain cases, this addresses the real problem rather than merely a consequence.
It is important to clearly identify the cause and discuss it with the client, so that they can make a well-informed decision and are not disappointed afterwards by a disappointing result. An eyelid correction is a treatment that can be performed under local anaesthesia and takes approximately 45 minutes. The excess skin is carefully marked before the treatment. The skin is then anaesthetised and the marked section is removed, along with some muscle and underlying fatty tissue if necessary. Once this is done, the skin is closed with a non-absorbable suture, which is secured with a surgical plaster that must remain in place for the first seven days. Lifting and bending should be avoided as much as possible in the week following the treatment. After the treatment the eyes will be swollen and slightly bruised. One week after the procedure we remove the sutures, and once you have healed well you may resume all activities.
Who is an eyelid correction suitable for?
'In principle for everyone, but if the patient is taking medication that must not be interrupted, the question arises whether it is wise to perform a treatment. Patients who use blood thinners or immunosuppressants are at greater risk of complications. These may include troublesome post-operative bleeding and/or impaired wound healing. If an eyelid correction is requested for cosmetic reasons, we may sometimes need to advise against it. If it is for medical reasons, we must carefully assess whether we can perform the treatment safely.
I also want to urge people to make sure they are well informed about treatments they wish to undergo. The practitioner must be competent and also able to manage complications well. We too often see the consequences of insufficient care and choosing the cheapest provider.'
How long does the result of an eyelid correction last?
On average you benefit from an eyelid correction for 10 to 15 years, although this depends on your skin and the cause of the drooping eyelid. Should the complaints or cosmetic concerns recur, you can have the treatment performed again without any problem.
