Joost Staudt speaks in For You Magazine about the effects of plastic surgery and his work at Blooming Plastische Chirurgie. He also answers questions about his profession and the treatments he carries out. It has long been possible to alter aspects of one's appearance when dissatisfied with them. Increasing numbers of people are finding their way to the clinic for various treatments such as a nose correction, eyelid correction, tummy tuck, and breast corrections. Plastic or cosmetic surgery opens up a great deal of possibilities in terms of body enhancement.
What should you bear in mind if you want to have something changed about your body or face?
'The effects of an operation are not always predictable, because you are working with human tissue, which responds in a certain way to a procedure. People really do need to know that it is not all plain sailing with an operation. We strive for perfection, but every body is different.
What can happen after an operation?
Our clients are informed of the risks beforehand and are aware of them. They also know that the final result is influenced by various factors and that post-operative bleeding or wound infections may occur. With a breast implant, for example, a scar will form and there is a possibility of developing capsular contracture. We strive for perfection and do our very best to achieve it.
Is this also addressed during the intake?
'Yes, this is certainly addressed. We conduct a very thorough consultation, which lasts approximately 45 minutes. Sometimes we even hold a second or third meeting. We look not only at the wishes and expectations of patients, but also at their self-image. We want to inform patients properly, and this includes pointing out the risks. A large, and perhaps the largest, part of the conversation concerns the things that can go wrong. We do not send someone away after ten minutes with an invoice. Instead, we take time for them, take detailed photographs of what they wish to change, and provide them with a patient information leaflet about the treatment. Patients are also given time to reflect.
Are patients ever turned away?
This does happen on occasion. We only carry out a treatment if we can bring about an improvement. If someone has an unrealistic image of themselves or of a treatment, we sometimes say 'no'. As a plastic surgeon, you must act in the patient's best interest and sometimes refrain from performing an operation on their behalf. We occasionally see young adults at the clinic who are not always willing to listen to the downsides of a procedure.
Where do the operations and procedures take place?
At Spaarne Gasthuis Noord, we are situated on the 3rd floor. We also work from other hospitals with an intensive care unit. We find that patients feel safer because they are treated in a hospital setting. When we treat patients outside the hospital, a hospital is always available as backup. Should an acute problem arise some time after the operation, patients can reach a plastic surgeon by phone immediately, both in the evening and at the weekend.
