Breasts are fascinating and complex, yet there's much that many people don't know about them. From the natural changes that occur throughout life — puberty, pregnancy, weight fluctuation, and ageing — to common misconceptions about breast size, symmetry, and health, this article explores surprising facts about breast anatomy and development. Understanding your own body can help you make more informed decisions about your health and any aesthetic concerns you may have.
The specialists at Kliniek Blooming perform various types of breast corrections every week, such as breast augmentations, breast lifts, and breast reconstructions. They regularly receive breast-related questions from patients. There is still a great deal of confusion among women (and men) about breasts. In this blog we would like to highlight a number of myths and facts to provide some clarity about breasts.
Myths about Breasts
There are quite a few myths about breasts. These include the influence of food, the use of 'magic' pills that make breasts grow, and that large breasts increase the risk of disease. According to some people, eating sesame seeds would be beneficial for breast growth. However, this is not true.
Manufacturers of certain breast growth products claim that there are pills that cause breasts to grow — this too is not true. There are simply no pills that will make your breasts grow. During a breast reduction, our patients regularly ask whether breastfeeding is still possible after such a reduction. The answer is yes, but there is also a portion of patients who can no longer breastfeed after a breast reduction. The plastic surgeon can tell you more about this, as the technique used determines whether breastfeeding will or will not remain possible. You must of course qualify for such a technique. Breastfeeding is also still possible after a breast reduction or augmentation. Incidentally, breastfeeding does not cause breasts to sag — that is also a myth.
Facts about Breasts
Alongside many myths, there are also a number of interesting facts about breasts. Did you know, for example, that a breast is partly composed of fat? This means that the breasts can also shrink during dieting or weight loss. Research shows that our breasts are on average becoming progressively larger.
At the moment, the average bra size in the Netherlands is approximately 80C. Wearing a bra provides a great deal of comfort. From a medical perspective, however, this is not strictly necessary. Breasts do not in fact sag sooner by not wearing a bra.
In the area of breastfeeding there were a number of myths, but there are also a number of interesting facts about breastfeeding. By breastfeeding you can lose the excess weight from pregnancy more quickly, and under certain conditions you are protected against pregnancy.
