What to Keep in Mind After Rhinoplasty

Recovery after rhinoplasty requires patience and careful attention to aftercare. In this article, our plastic surgeons explain what to expect in the weeks and months following nose surgery, including swelling, bruising, and activity restrictions. We provide practical tips on how to support healing, protect your results, and know when to contact your surgeon. Understanding the recovery process in advance helps patients manage their expectations and ensures they get the best possible outcome from their surgery. Follow our expert advice for a smooth and successful recovery.

Stitches, splints, swelling, bruising — all things you will encounter after rhinoplasty. A rhinoplasty is a significant procedure; prepare thoroughly for your recovery.
  • You may go home a few hours after the procedure. Arrange someone to collect you — you cannot drive yourself.
  • Avoid pressure on your nose. Sleep on your back with your face slightly elevated.
  • Shower the day after, but keep your nose dry the first week. Avoid very hot showers.
  • Expect possible pulling pain, headaches, swelling and bruising in the first week. Have painkillers ready. You will receive medications and a spray for the nose.
  • A protective splint is placed on the nose. After one week, the splint and stitches are removed.
  • Rest for a few days. Resume light tasks after one week. Return to work after two weeks. Wait one month before strenuous activity.
  • Your sense of smell may temporarily disappear — this is normal.
  • Your nose may swell shut temporarily — also normal.
  • First results are visible immediately; final result after one year.
