As a result of pregnancy, surgery, ageing, or weight loss, you may have a significant amount of excess, stretched, and loose skin around the abdomen. A tummy tuck can treat this problem.
What does a tummy tuck involve?
A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure in which excess skin and fat are removed. This is often combined with tightening of the abdominal muscles for the best possible result. There are several types of tummy tuck:
- A mini tummy tuck. Suitable when there is only a small amount of excess skin below the navel.
- An extended tummy tuck. Required when the muscles and/or abdominal wall are significantly weakened, or when there is more excess skin below and/or above the navel.
- A Fleur-de-Lis tummy tuck. Involves both a horizontal and vertical incision, used when there is significant fat and hanging excess skin in multiple directions.
- A circumferential tummy tuck or lower body lift. The scar extends across the abdomen and back. Necessary when there is excess skin and/or fatty tissue extending towards the back.
- A pubic lift. Possible when there is too much fat and skin around the mons pubis. Usually an additional procedure alongside a tummy tuck.
During the consultation, the surgeon will look together with you at what the best treatment will be for your situation.
Am I eligible?
To qualify for reimbursement of a tummy tuck, you must meet strict insurer requirements, such as severe restriction of movement or untreatable skin irritation. Request the conditions from your insurer. If you do not qualify for reimbursement, you may choose to pay for the surgery yourself at a private clinic such as Blooming Plastische Chirurgie.
Recovery
After the surgery, it is important to take things easy for six weeks. During this period, you will wear compression garments to support the healing process. You may move gently and gradually increase your activities. After 6 weeks, you may resume exercise and heavy lifting.
