In the Netherlands, plastic surgery is by no means always eligible for reimbursement by health insurance. Furthermore, it depends on how comprehensive your cover is, and where. Nevertheless, you may experience complaints that you would like treated, even if they are not reimbursed. That is possible at Blooming Plastische Chirurgie. But how exactly does it work with insurance?
Covered or Not?
Some plastic surgical treatments are covered by the basic insurance policy, but by no means all. This is because plastic surgical treatments are in many cases still considered non-essential, despite many treatments also promoting quality of life. Think for example of restricted movement due to an overhanging abdomen, or limited vision due to drooping eyelids. An eyelid correction is only reimbursed when the skin covers half of the pupil and therefore truly causes a functional problem.
Selection
The line is fairly easy to draw: treatments that aim to beautify, but have no (sufficient) medical purpose, are not reimbursed. It is worth looking into this before undergoing a treatment. What is unfortunately not taken into account when assessing whether you qualify for treatment reimbursement is how mental health is affected by the complaint, because aesthetic operations can also contribute enormously to mental health.
