The nose plays a central role in the harmony and balance of the face, yet many people feel dissatisfied with its appearance. This in-depth article explores nasal anatomy, common concerns patients present with, and how rhinoplasty can address them. From reducing a prominent bridge to refining the tip or correcting asymmetry, our surgeons at Blooming take a highly individualised approach to nose correction, always working to complement the patient's overall facial features.
During the month of August, the nose takes centre stage at Kliniek Blooming. This month, the organ is explored in greater depth and you can read all about rhinoplasty. In this latest blog, we explore a range of interesting facts about the nose.
Functions of the Nose
The nose is an organ and serves a number of important, vital functions. One of these is breathing, for which the organ carries out several important tasks. When you breathe through your nose, for example, the inhaled air is filtered, unlike breathing through the mouth. This prevents harmful substances from entering the body. In addition to this ‘air filter’, the nose warms the inhaled air and also enables you to smell.
Smell and the Nose
Inside the nose are the so-called olfactory receptors, located at the back of the nose and containing various sensitive hairs. Thanks to this olfactory organ, detected scents are transmitted to the brain, where they are perceived.
The olfactory organ is very small, but has an enormously large influence on our daily lives. Did you know, for example, that the smell of food determines whether we find it tasty? Furthermore, the nose raises the alarm as soon as food smells off or contains harmful substances — an ideal detection device!
Whilst it is something many people take for granted, there are approximately 300,000 people in the Netherlands who cannot smell at all. The absence of this sense of smell is also known as Anosmia.
Associations of the Nose
Through scents, our brains make associations with events. In this way, memories become linked to a smell. For instance, the smell of a damp forest may remind you of playing outside as a child, or the scent of freshly baked biscuits may bring to mind the wonderful baking creations of your parents. In addition to these associations, scent can also be a determining factor in whether we find people agreeable. If someone smells pleasant, they are indeed more quickly regarded as likeable.
A Prominent Feature
Despite the fact that the nose plays an important positive role in our lives, for some people the nose can also have a negative side. Noses come in all shapes and sizes, and not everyone is equally pleased with their own. This negative experience can cause insecurity and a sense of dissatisfaction. Fortunately, a great deal of research has been carried out in the field of plastic surgery and today there are various treatments available to make the nose more ‘fitting’.
Kliniek Blooming employs a number of plastic surgeons with extensive experience in rhinoplasty. In a rhinoplasty, the shape or length of the nose can be adjusted. This relatively ‘minor’ procedure can help someone feel beautiful again and regain their confidence. It can also lead to an improved function of the nasal organ.
