No facial feature is as defining for your appearance as your nose. No two noses are alike — large, small, wide or narrow. A turned-up nose or a hooked nose… the most important thing is that your nose suits your face. If you feel your nose is 'out of proportion', a rhinoplasty may be the solution. No one takes this step overnight, and during the decision-making process many questions arise. Plastic surgeon Gilean Nolst Trenité answers several frequently asked questions about rhinoplasty.
1. How long will others be able to tell I have had nose surgery?
"If there are stitches on the underside of the nose, these are removed after approximately one week. Sometimes you may still see small bruises under the eyes. After 10 days, people generally can no longer tell that you have had surgery."
2. Will I have nasal packs, and how long do they need to stay in?
"In some cases it is necessary to leave a gauze with ointment (nasal pack) in the nostrils. These remain in place for a maximum of one day and can be removed at home yourself. Often it is not necessary to place a pack at all — we can tell you this before the operation."
3. Is rhinoplasty a painful operation?
"No, not at all! Even when the nasal bones need to be narrowed, the operation is not particularly painful. It is sensible to take paracetamol during the first few days to manage any discomfort."
4. Do you need to stay overnight after a rhinoplasty?
"After a rhinoplasty you may go home the same day. Sleep at home with extra pillows behind your back so that you are in a slightly more upright position."
