The Pros and Cons of a Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) can be a transformative procedure for people who struggle with excess skin and weakened abdominal muscles after pregnancy or significant weight loss. In this article, our plastic surgeons outline the key benefits of a tummy tuck, including a flatter abdomen and improved body contour, alongside the important considerations such as a longer recovery time and permanent scarring. We believe informed patients make the best decisions, and we are committed to giving you all the information you need to choose wisely. Book a consultation to discuss your individual situation with us.

The pros and cons of a tummy tuck largely determine whether you choose to undergo the procedure. It is important that you have realistic expectations of the tummy tuck. Our plastic surgeons therefore place great importance on thorough pre- and post-operative care for a tummy tuck. The advantages of a tummy tuck are:
  • A firmer and flatter abdomen
  • A virtually painless procedure
  • Scars that, where possible, fall beneath your underwear
  • The best aftercare for a complete recovery
Of course, there are also disadvantages to a tummy tuck. However, these do not outweigh the advantages:

The first consultation: your wishes at the centre

During the first consultation, you will discuss your wishes, medical background, and medication use with your treating plastic surgeon. Based on your wishes, the surgeon will draw up a bespoke treatment plan. In this treatment plan, your wishes are combined with the technical possibilities. The surgeons at Blooming have years of experience with tummy tucks and therefore always choose the most appropriate treatment method. Which treatment is suitable for you depends on your complaints, skin structure, and elasticity. It is sometimes necessary to combine several treatment methods in order to achieve the desired result.

Tummy tuck: virtually painless

The tummy tuck is performed under general anaesthesia, which means the procedure is virtually painless as you are not aware of anything during the surgery. A tummy tuck is, however, an operation, and you will therefore need to go through a recovery period afterwards. During the first few days after the tummy tuck, you may experience a pulling and nagging pain in the skin around the wound. Not only your skin, but also the underlying fatty and muscle tissue will have been tightened, which can cause a bruised and tight sensation. You will receive advice on appropriate pain relief to ease post-operative pain, and rest in bed is recommended for the first few days.

Tightening your abdomen

A tummy tuck corrects your sagging skin and excess skin. Weight loss, ageing, or pregnancy can cause your skin to sag. The tummy tuck restores your firm abdomen. It is important to note that a tummy tuck is not intended to help you lose weight. Therefore, ensure that you have reached the target weight discussed with your surgeon before undergoing the procedure. During the first consultation, your treating plastic surgeon will give you a realistic picture of the tummy tuck. This way, you will not be faced with any surprises and can make the right decision.

Scars just above the pubic area

The scars from a tummy tuck are placed, where possible, below the bikini line and just above the pubic area. In this way, the scars are as little visible as possible when you are wearing only your bikini, swimwear, or underwear. During the first few weeks after the tummy tuck, the scar will be red and swollen, but this will subside on its own. At the first check-up, you will receive a scar cream to apply to the scars once the wound has closed and the crusts have disappeared. By massaging the nourishing cream into the scars twice a day, the chances of a good healing outcome are improved. The scar requires approximately one year to heal fully.

The best care after your tummy tuck

The night after the tummy tuck, you will stay in hospital so that we can provide the best possible aftercare. The following day, the nursing staff will decide together with your treating surgeon whether you are able to go home. During the procedure, the plastic surgeon places a number of drains to remove blood and wound fluid. These will be removed after approximately three days. A tummy tuck is a major procedure, and we therefore advise three full days of bed rest. It is important that as little tension as possible is placed on the wound.
