Pros and Cons of Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is one of the most requested procedures at Blooming, but it is a decision that deserves careful thought. In this article, our plastic surgeons outline the main advantages — including increased confidence, improved symmetry, and a fuller silhouette — alongside the important considerations, such as recovery time, the lifespan of implants, and the commitment to long-term follow-up. We believe every patient deserves honest, complete information before making any decision. Our team is here to guide you every step of the way and help you determine whether breast augmentation is right for you.

The pros and cons of a breast augmentation treatment give you a realistic expectation of the procedure. Our plastic surgeons attach great importance to thorough pre-operative care and aftercare following a breast augmentation. At Blooming, you benefit from the following advantages:
  • Breast augmentation tailored to your wishes
  • Exclusive use of safe breast implants
  • Invisible scars after the augmentation
  • The best aftercare for optimal recovery
  • Quality over quantity
  • A reliable environment and the best aftercare
Of course, there are also disadvantages to breast augmentation, but these are often outweighed by the advantages. "Well prepared for the procedure, it went without complications. Neat scars that you can barely see 6 months later. Expert plastic surgeon, definitely recommended!"

Discussing Your Wishes During the Intake Consultation

During the consultation with your treating plastic surgeon, you will discuss your wishes and expectations regarding the breast augmentation. The plastic surgeon will answer your questions and then review your medical history with you. The surgeon will take photographs for your file and examine your breasts. We will measure the size of your breasts and assess the thickness and quality of your skin. Based on this information, the plastic surgeon will draw up a personalised treatment plan. They will determine the type of prosthesis and whether it is to be placed above or below the chest muscle. Using a number of examples laid out for you, you and the surgeon will together determine the size of your new breasts. In this way, we combine your wishes with the technical possibilities for an optimal result. The initial consultation lasts approximately three quarters of an hour and is designed to inform you as fully as possible and to address any doubts you may have about the breast augmentation. Our plastic surgeons guide you from pre-operative care to aftercare so that you feel at ease.

The Best Aftercare

We want to provide you with the best aftercare following the procedure, and therefore you will stay overnight in hospital after the breast augmentation. Your nurse and treating plastic surgeon will together determine when it is time for you to go home. It is advisable to arrange assistance for the first week after returning home. Your body will be weakened after the breast augmentation and you will not be able to resume your daily activities immediately. After two weeks, you will return to us for the first check-up. The treating plastic surgeon will verify that your recovery is progressing without complications and will make an appointment with you for the final check-up three months later. Should complications become apparent during the first consultation, you will visit us more frequently for monitoring.

Exclusive Use of Safe Breast Implants

There are many different types of breast prostheses, varying in size, shape, and content. We exclusively use approved prostheses of the highest quality. These are completely safe. Depending on your wishes and what the treating plastic surgeon determines, the surgeon will decide which prostheses to use. After the breast prosthesis has been placed, the body produces scar tissue that forms around the prosthesis. This is a natural reaction of the body to something that is not its own: the prosthesis. Should excessive capsule formation occur, it may be necessary at a later stage to have this removed. This is at your own expense.

Invisible Scars After the Breast Augmentation

The scars from the breast augmentation surgery are positioned precisely in the skin fold at the base of the breast. To be able to place the prostheses, an incision of approximately five centimetres is made. Your plastic surgeon will do everything possible to make the scars as inconspicuous as possible. In the first weeks after the procedure, the scars will be red and swollen, but these will gradually fade with time. Bear in mind that a scar needs between one and one and a half years to heal fully. Keep your scars completely out of the sun during the first year and care for them diligently with the prescribed scar cream. It is also very important to protect the scars with a sunscreen of at least factor 30. This ensures the fastest possible scar recovery.
