Pros and Cons of a Facelift

A facelift can deliver dramatic and long-lasting facial rejuvenation, but like any surgical procedure, it comes with both benefits and considerations. In this balanced overview, our plastic surgeons at Blooming explain the main advantages of facelift surgery — including natural-looking results that can last a decade or more — as well as the recovery time, potential risks, and the importance of choosing a qualified surgeon. Understanding both sides helps you make an informed decision. Our team is always available to answer your questions and help you determine whether a facelift is the right option for you.

Combat the signs of ageing in your face with a facelift. When your skin has become lax and the contours of your face are less defined, undergoing a facelift is a suitable option. A facelift gives you a refreshed appearance and a more youthful look. A facelift is most effective when you experience:
  • Sagging skin along your jawline
  • Excess loose skin and fat in your neck
  • Drooping cheekbones
  • Deep wrinkles and folds in your face
  • Deep grooves around the nose and corners of the mouth
It is important that you have realistic expectations of the final result. Our plastic surgeons therefore place great importance on thorough pre- and post-operative care for facelift treatments.

The First Consultation: Discussing Your Wishes

During the initial consultation, you will meet your treating plastic surgeon and discuss your wishes together. In this first consultation, the surgeon takes ample time to go through all aspects of the facelift and advise you on the type of facelift most suitable for you. The plastic surgeon creates a personalised treatment plan by combining your wishes with the technical possibilities. Thanks to the plastic surgeons' many years of experience, they will always choose the right treatment method for you. Which treatment is suitable for you depends on the structure and elasticity of your skin.

Very skilled and professional. Drs. Pot explains everything very clearly and is visibly delighted with the results. An excellent treatment and a result I am extremely pleased with.

Virtually Painless Under General Anaesthesia

A facelift procedure is almost always performed under general anaesthesia. The exception is a minor procedure such as a mini-lift, for which our plastic surgeon may opt for a local anaesthetic. The anaesthesia ensures that you are unaware of the procedure. A facelift is therefore not experienced as painful. However, you may feel fatigued for weeks after the operation and experience swelling and changes in sensation in the face, which could be a drawback of the procedure for you. Whether you actually feel unwell varies from person to person. If you have doubts about the cosmetic procedure, discuss this with your plastic surgeon: they will give you the best advice.

A Youthful and Fresh Appearance with a Facelift

A facelift is an excellent way to tighten loose skin in your face. During a facelift procedure, not only the skin but also the underlying muscle and connective tissue is tightened. This procedure gives your face, jaw, and neck a youthful appearance once again. The plastic surgeon makes an incision around the ear and above the hairline. To achieve the best result, the muscle tissue just beneath the skin is also tightened. A good facelift will not remove all your wrinkles: wrinkles that form when laughing or talking are preserved. This is important for the facial expressions and is part of your natural appearance.

No false promises were made during the orientation consultation, and my confidence was immediately gained. After the extensive neck facelift, the result - especially regarding the neck - was simply fantastic. The aftercare from the nursing department was also excellent. In one word: Wonderful!

Invisible Scars

Shortly after the facelift, you will look younger and radiant once again. Your skin needs time to heal properly after the procedure. In the first few days, your skin may be swollen, and some areas of skin around your face may appear bruised or discoloured. Do not be alarmed if you notice this in the mirror: it is part of the healing process and will have disappeared within a few weeks. Our plastic surgeons aim during the procedure to make incisions in areas that are not easily visible: in the fold of your ears, the hairline, or directly behind the ear. During the check-up that takes place after one or two weeks, the sutures are removed. The scars from the facelift procedure are barely visible after approximately twelve weeks and require a year to mature fully. Scars never disappear entirely.

The Best Care After Your Facelift

We place great importance on aftercare, which is why you always have the option to spend a night in hospital so that we can provide all the care you need. After the operation, you will receive a pressure bandage around your head which must remain in place for a week. Our plastic surgeons leave a number of small drains in the wound during the facelift to ensure proper drainage of fluid. These will be removed after one or two days. A facelift is not a painful procedure, but you may still experience some post-operative pain. In that case, use the prescribed pain relief we provide. Rest for a few days after the facelift and allow your body time to recover fully. Most patients are able to return to work after two weeks. Exercise and physical exertion are only permitted again after six weeks.

Aftercare

  • Rest completely for a few days
  • Visit the clinic if necessary to have the drains removed
  • After one to two weeks, attend a check-up appointment at which any sutures and dressings will be removed
  • Take pain relief when you are in pain
  • Allow your skin the time to recover fully
  • Use scar cream to reduce your scars

A True Rejuvenation Treatment

After the facelift, changes in your face become more clearly visible with each passing month. The full final result is not visible until approximately four to six months after the procedure. Scars typically require a year to mature fully. With a facelift, you undergo a complete rejuvenation treatment that you can enjoy for many years to come. The length of time a facelift remains visible varies from person to person, but on average this is approximately 10 to 15 years. Through a healthy lifestyle and good skincare, you will get the most out of your facelift treatment.
