A New Beginning with Labiaplasty

There can be various reasons to be unhappy with the appearance of your labia. Read here about how it can be addressed with a labiaplasty!

There can be various reasons why you are dissatisfied with your labia, also known as the labia minora. These can, for example, stretch or change over the years due to pregnancy. With a labiaplasty, the labia can be treated. In principle, it is a fairly standard procedure. What we always do is an initial assessment during the intake consultation, where the patient is given a mirror during the physical examination so they can see along with us. We then discuss what is meant, what is possible, and what is realistic, says dr. Klaske Booij, plastic surgeon at Blooming.

Normal Labia

Many people do not know what normal labia look like, she explains. If it looks a little different from what they see in the media, they sometimes feel abnormal, while the normal variation in the appearance of normal labia is actually very large.

Setting Expectations

During the consultation, it is important to assess whether the complaints and wishes are realistic. Spontaneous pain, for example, never stems from labia that are too large. In that case, investigation into a possible underlying cause must be carried out. Klaske: During the physical examination, we look at the anatomy, shape, and size of the labia. It must be ensured that a natural shape is maintained and the labia must not become too small. They serve the function of keeping the vagina moist. During the consultation, I explain what the labiaplasty entails and we discuss possible complications, expectations, and lifestyle guidelines.

The Labiaplasty

The procedure takes an average of one hour and is performed while you are lying in stirrups. This allows me good access and is the most comfortable position for you. I mark out the area that we are going to remove and let you follow along using a mirror. Afterwards, the wounds are closed with dissolvable sutures. After one day, you may already shower briefly; after two weeks, you come in for the first check-up. The area is particularly sensitive during the first week. On average, no pressure may be exerted on the area for three to six weeks. This means no sports, no cycling, and no sexual intercourse. The final check-up is after three months. Often only then can you truly see the final result.

Always Transparent

Klaske: Because I am honest during the intake about what someone can expect from the labiaplasty, I prevent disappointments about the result. If I see someone with unrealistic expectations, I address this during the consultation. I then advise against the treatment, because I cannot deliver the result the patient wants. Most ladies say they wished they had had it done sooner. At Blooming, we are happy to help you feel beautiful in your own body again.
