Are You a Man with Unusual Breast Growth?

Enlarged breast tissue in men, known as gynecomastia, is more common than most people realise and can cause significant physical discomfort and emotional distress. The condition may affect one or both sides and is often related to hormonal changes, medication, or genetics. At Blooming Plastische Chirurgie, our experienced plastic surgeons offer effective treatments — including liposuction and glandular tissue removal — to create a flatter, more masculine chest contour. A personalised consultation will determine the most appropriate approach for your individual situation.

Not only women visit our clinic for breast surgery. Men are also increasingly coming in for breast corrections. This often involves unwanted breast development, which can cause both physical and psychological complaints. Breast development in men, also known as gynaecomastia, is caused by swelling of the mammary gland. The development of these swellings can have various causes.
  • Use of certain medications
  • Breast cancer
  • Taking certain hormones
  • Abnormal hormone production in the body
  • Breast development due to fat deposits
  • Metabolic changes due to kidney or liver disease
  • Use of alcohol and drugs
In addition to the above, it can also occur that no direct cause for the breast development can be found. Complaints In men, gynaecomastia can cause psychological problems. They feel less masculine and often feel uncomfortable about the breast development. Gynaecomastia can also cause physical complaints; men may experience painful and sensitive breasts. Treatment Depending on the cause of gynaecomastia, the most appropriate treatment for the patient is determined.
  • When the breast development has a non-natural cause, the cause is investigated. If the cause is medication use, an alternative medication is explored. In the case of breast cancer, the nipple, mammary gland and sentinel lymph node are usually completely removed.
  • If the cause is not clear, the usual course of action is to remove the glandular tissue beneath the nipple.
  • Sometimes a testicular tumour is the cause. In that case, the testicle is removed and an alternative treatment is sought to address the underlying cause.
Possible surgical complications This treatment is relatively safe, but as with any operation there is always a risk of complications. The patient may experience post-operative bleeding and infections. There is also a risk of thrombosis and pneumonia. However, these complications are rare.
