Recent research has shown that a tummy tuck produces a positive result for both body and mind in clients with excess skin and fatty tissue.

Extreme excess skin or major changes cause feelings of insecurity

Excess skin — often resulting from extreme weight loss through intensive exercise or a gastric bypass in someone with obesity — causes people to feel less happy with themselves and their appearance. The surplus skin hangs over the abdomen and must essentially be tucked into trousers, which is not only unsightly but above all uncomfortable. There are also many women who experience weakened abdominal muscles and looser skin as a result of pregnancy and childbirth.

Quality of life improves

Women hope that by having a tummy tuck, they will feel better in their own skin again. Excess skin that results from extreme weight loss in particular often reminds patients of a difficult period when they were much heavier. In order to put that period behind them, they choose to have a tummy tuck. That is one of the reasons why the tummy tuck significantly improves quality of life in various areas, as demonstrated by the research of Maarten Hoogbergen, associated with the Obesity Centre at the Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven. After the procedure, patients feel much better:
  • Physically: easier movement
  • Socially: more social interaction and enjoyment of life
  • Sexually: greater desire for intimacy and less shame about one's own body
  • Psychologically: pride in one's own body and self once more

Reimbursement for the tummy tuck

Given that quality of life improves so significantly for clients, one might assume that the procedure would be reimbursed. However, to qualify for reimbursement of a tummy tuck, strict conditions must be met. For example, there must be evidence of disfigurement, such as burns, or a serious functional limitation, such as chafing skin folds and a significant restriction of freedom of movement. In addition, your weight must have been stable for one year and your BMI must be below 30. For a weight-loss surgery, your BMI must be below 35. Do you have excess skin on your abdomen, does it bother you greatly, and would you like to be rid of it? Then make an appointment with the plastic surgeon at Blooming to discuss the possibilities.
