Breast Augmentation After Pregnancy

Breast Augmentation After Pregnancy

Many women consider breast augmentation after pregnancy and breastfeeding, when the breasts may have lost volume or changed shape. This is one of the most common reasons patients request breast surgery, and the results can be very gratifying. This article explains what changes pregnancy typically causes, how breast augmentation can address them, and what to consider if you plan to have more children. Timing, implant choice, and recovery are all covered in this comprehensive guide.

In many women, breasts begin to sag due to hormonal fluctuations during and after pregnancy. Have you had children and are you considering a breast augmentation? To prepare you as well as possible, you will find more information in this article about:

  • why breasts begin to sag after pregnancy;
  • the effects of pregnancy and breastfeeding on breasts;
  • how long you should wait before having an operation;
  • the difference between a breast augmentation and a breast lift.

Why do breasts begin to sag after pregnancy?

A pregnancy mask, wider hips, and a full head of hair: a woman's body changes in many ways during pregnancy. One of the most important changes is perhaps the preparation for breastfeeding. As the mammary glands grow, most women's breasts are at least one cup size larger after pregnancy.

The effects of pregnancy and breastfeeding on breasts

When you have given birth, or stop breastfeeding, the mammary glands shrink. Due to the increase and decrease in breast volume, the skin can become somewhat looser and they may begin to sag. This does vary from woman to woman: for some women, the breasts remain larger for life, whilst others are less fortunate and find their breasts change into what are commonly referred to as 'empty sacks'.

How long should you wait before having an operation?

'Nine months up, nine months down', as the saying goes. After a pregnancy, the body needs sufficient time to recover. Our plastic surgeons advise waiting at least six months after giving birth before undergoing any procedure. If you are breastfeeding, this period begins from the moment you stop feeding. It is also important that your weight is stable, so that the surgeon can make a good assessment of the cup size that best suits your body.

The difference between a breast augmentation and a breast lift

Have your breasts begun to sag, but are you satisfied with the volume? Then a breast lift will likely achieve the best result. During this procedure, the surgeon repositions the nipples and tightens the skin, reducing the sag of the breasts. If you are dissatisfied with the volume of your breasts, the surgeon will recommend a breast augmentation. The procedures can also be combined.
