Paris Melis answers the most frequently asked questions about gynaecomastia. Breast development in men — how does it occur? It can be caused by a hormonal imbalance or by disease. In testicular cancer, approximately 30% of patients develop breast tissue. If you are considering a consultation, please be aware that the doctor may ask you to lower your trousers in order to rule out testicular cancer. How is it treated?
Under general anaesthesia, the glandular tissue is removed via a semi-circular incision at the edge of the areola. Often there is also an excess of fat, which can be neatly removed with the aid of liposuction. If there is also surplus skin, this can be corrected via an incision around the areola. Are there scars after the treatment? Yes, though we aim to create as few scars as possible. Typically just one small scar below the areola. How long will I be unable to work after the treatment? Depending on the extent of the treatment, most patients are able to return to work after just 2 weeks.

Is the Result After Treatment Permanent?

Yes, the glandular tissue that has been removed will not return. In cases of breast development caused by disease, however, it is necessary to treat the underlying cause; otherwise the breast tissue may return.
