90% of Women Would Choose Breast Reconstruction Again

Research shows that an overwhelming 90% of women who have undergone breast reconstruction after mastectomy would choose to have the surgery again. This powerful statistic reflects the profound impact that reconstruction can have on a woman's sense of self, body image, and overall wellbeing. At Blooming, our plastic surgeons specialise in breast reconstruction and work closely with oncology teams to offer personalised care. In this article, we explore why so many patients are so satisfied with their results and what the journey to reconstruction involves.

Many women who have lost a breast in the fight against breast cancer consider a breast reconstruction. A breast reconstruction is a major operation that can involve many complications and uncertainties. Yet the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF) writes in their breast reconstruction brochure that three-quarters of women are moderately to very satisfied after a few years. Almost 90 per cent of women would choose a breast reconstruction again. For many women, however, this decision is difficult to make due to the possible complications and uncertainty about the final result.

Losing a breast can have serious psychological consequences for women. They often experience it as a mutilation and feel less feminine or incomplete. A breast reconstruction in many cases helps women regain their confidence and feel stronger. They dare to be seen again and leave the house more often.

After the operation

For the first 6 weeks after a breast reconstruction, patients must take things easy. It is helpful to have a home help during these weeks. During these weeks, as with other operations, there is a risk of post-operative bleeding or infection. If a hard and stiff connective tissue capsule has formed around the implant, a second operation may be necessary. Due to the capsular contracture, the breast feels hard and painful. During the second operation, the capsule is incised or removed. This is often a temporary solution, as capsular contracture can recur. A reconstructed breast will always look different from a natural breast. Sometimes the natural breast needs to be reduced or lifted to minimise differences between the two breasts.
