4 Frequently Asked Questions About Breast Augmentation

Considering breast augmentation but have questions? You are not alone. This article answers four of the most common questions our surgeons hear from patients — from choosing the right implant size and type to understanding recovery time and long-term care. Whether you're wondering about the difference between round and anatomical implants, or what happens if you want to breastfeed after surgery, we provide clear and honest answers to help you make an informed decision.

If you are considering a breast augmentation, you may have many questions. This is entirely natural given the nature of the procedure. This article answers the 4 most frequently asked questions about breast augmentation, so that you can take this important step with confidence.

1. Is it true that implants increase the risk of breast cancer?

NO: Various studies have shown that there is no greater risk of developing breast cancer when a woman has breast implants. A standard breast examination is also still possible, as the breast implant is placed beneath the breast glandular tissue. A mammogram is also still possible, although the prosthesis can make the examination more complex. In short: Neither breast cancer screening is made impossible, nor is the risk of breast cancer increased by having breast implants.

2. Is there an increased risk of autoimmune diseases with breast implants?

NO: A relationship between breast implants and rheumatoid arthritis, Wegener's disease, Sjögren's syndrome, and other autoimmune diseases has never been scientifically proven. Various studies involving thousands of female test subjects have never been able to demonstrate such a relationship.

3. Can I exercise after breast augmentation?

YES: A breast augmentation need not be a barrier to practising most sports. You will still be able to run, cycle, swim, etc., just as you did before the operation. However, this is not possible on the first day after the operation. On average, you should be able to gradually resume exercise about six weeks after the operation. Recovery after breast augmentation is relatively quick. A few days after the procedure you will already be able to walk, and after two weeks cycling will also be possible.

4. Will I (or in the future) still be able to breastfeed with breast implants?

YES: Absolutely. The insertion of a breast prosthesis has no effect on the mammary glands. Ideally, the nipple and areola are not affected, but this need not have any direct (negative) consequences. The implants also have no effect on breast milk. Should you still have any doubts or require further information following this article, please contact us or visit our webpage on breast augmentation.
